CAO points to go up as number of applicants soars

Considerable points increases in a variety of 3rd level courses are likely this year, as the number of CAO applicants is set to reach a record high.

The Irish Times reported this week that current CAO figures show an increase of 2,000 applicants compared to the same time last year. Based on recent trends, this indicates that total applications are ultimately set to reach 80,000 for the first time since the CAO system was established in 1976.

Three major factors – population growth, the recession and higher numbers of mature applicants – have contributed to a rise of 30,000 in numbers progressing to third level in recent years. Experts predict significant point increases this year for popular courses, especially those in fast-growing sectors like business, science and technology.
